Passage 1
Dick lived in England. One day in January he said to his wife, 'I'm going to fly to New York next week because I've got some work there.' 'Where are you going to stay there?' his wife asked. 'I don't know yet.' Dick answered. 'Please send me your address from there in a telegram (电报),' his wife said. 'All right,' Dick answered.
He flew to New York on January 31st and found a nice hotel in the center of the city. He put his things in his room and then he sent his wife a telegram. He put the address of his hotel in it.
In the evening he didn't have any work, so he went to a cinema. He came out at nine o'clock and said, 'Now I'm going back to my hotel and have a nice dinner.'
He found a taxi (出租车) and the driver said, 'Where do you want to go?' But Dick didn't remember the name and address of his hotel.
'Which hotel are my things in?' he said, 'And what am I going to do tonight?' But the driver of the taxi did not know. So Dick got out and went into a post office. There he sent his wife another telegram, and in it he wrote, 'Please send me my address at this post office.' |

Passage 2：
There are many war novels but the novel I’m going to talk about today is unusual because it’s war seen through the eyes of a child. The “eyes” are those of J. G. Ballard, one of Britain’s most respected novelists. He was born in 1930, in Shanghai, where his father was a businessman, and he was only 11 years old when the city was occupied during the World War II. Ballard and his family were placed in a prison camp and he has said that his experiences there affected him so deeply that it was 40 years before he felt able to write about them. “Twenty years to forget and 20 years to remember.”
The result of Ballard’s experience was a semi-autobiographical novel called Empire of the Sunk, published in 1984. It quickly became a success and in 1987 it was made into a movie by Hollywood director, Steven Spielberg. Empire of the Sun tells the story of how a young boy, Jim Graham, survives the Japanese occupation. At the start of the story, Jim is living with his parents in a wealthy part of Shanghai. When the invasion begins, many of Shanghai’s inhabitants flee from the city and Jim’s parents do the same. But the boy becomes separated from them and finds himself all alone. He goes back to their empty home and lives alone there. Inevitably, he’s found and then he’s sent to a prison camp.
It’s a terrible four years, but the boy somehow survives. He steals food, finds ways of getting in and out of the camp, and is befriended by some Americans and a Japanese boy.
Is there a happy ending? Yes and no. Jim sees many people die; his Japanese friend is killed by the Americans. But at the end of the war, he gets back to Shanghai and is reunited with his parents.
Jim’s experiences are terrible, as a child who discovers the depths of human cruelty. But he learns also about the strength and courage that is possible, even in these circumstances. |

Do you know how to use a mobile phone without being rude to people around you?

Avoid these embarrassing situations by making sure your mobile phone is switched off.
When eating at a restaurant with friends, don’t place your mobile phone on the table. This conveys the message that your phone calls are more important than those around you.
Mobile phone have sensitive microphones that allow you to speak at the volume you would on a regular phone. This enables you to speak quietly so that others won’t hear the details of your conversations. If you are calling in a noisy area, use your hand to direct your voice into the microphone.
Many people believe that they can’t live without their mobile phones. Owning a mobile phone definitely makes life more convenient, but limit your conversations to urgent ones and save the personal calls until you are at home. |
