Passage One

Questions 1-5 are based on the following passage.

It is known to us that English is not as old as Chinese, but it is widely used by most people all over the world. English speakers enjoy creating new words. In fact, a majority of words are traceable and each of them may have an interesting story.

  However, no one will really care where a word comes from because it makes little difference in using them in our dally life. Did you ever feel confused about why hamburgers are called hamburgers, especially when they are not made with ham?

About a hundred years ago, some men went to American from Europe, coming from a big city in Germany called Hamburg. They didn't know how to use English properly. Seen them eating round pieces of beef and asked what it was, the Germans didn't understand the questions exactly, they answered: we come from Hamburg. One of the Americans was an owner of a restaurant and got an idea. He cooked some round pieces of bread with beef and began selling them. Such bread came to be called hamburgers. Today, hamburgers are welcomed by lots of people coming from different nationalities.

If youre looking for ways to improve your products or services, customers can be one of your most valuable sources of information and market research. So why not take it a step further and visit some of them?

Ideally, you want to do this in person, so you may need to offer you customers something for their time. They may be pleased that you take their opinion seriously, and they may also enjoy getting a chance to help influence your products or services. If you customers are in different places, you could make such visits part of your business travel to get a wider range of responses.

One expert recommends that you make your customers feel comfortable during the visits. Youre not trying to sell anything through these meetings, so plan to spend 80 percent of your time listening.

Dont try to lead your customer to give responses that you really want to hear. Instead, ask questions that focus on the customers experience, such as whether they got what they were hoping for and what they found difficult or enjoyable.

In giving a business presentation, many speakers think that if their idea is strong, their audience will get it readily. They feel discouraged when the audience is unable to understand their presentations. That happens a lot especially when technical experts are invited to make a product presentation to a group of users.

What can we do to make a business presentation easier to understand? In my view, good presentations have always been simple and visual. In an effective business presentation, the fewer the points, the better the message gets passed on. You focus on the depth of coverage instead of the width(广度)of coverage. Additionally, you make your ideas visual and relevant, so the message is understood better and remembered longer. Great business presenters relate their ideas and concepts to their audience by using simple, powerful diagrams instead of relying on text-based slides. In fact, drawing diagrams forces a presenter to make the idea clear even at the preparation stage. It is impossible to draw a diagram when you are not clear about an idea. When your idea is clear, it is easier to transfer it Most audiences understand a diagram faster and remember it longer. This possibly explains why most of the memorable presentations have been visual in nature.
