When you rsquo;ve read the same paragraph 10 times and you still make little of it as you are reading ancient Egyptian, and you rsquo;re not studying ancient Egyptian, it rsquo;s time for you to put the books down. Experts say good breaks are a critical part of exam preparation and actually make your brain work better.
Debbie Bruckner, the director of the Student Union Wellness Centre at the University of Calgary, says an overburdened brain stops processing new information. quot; You rsquo;ve got to put it into your short-term memory and then move it into your long-term memory, quot; she says. To do that, you need to stop cramming new knowledge into your head.
Psychologist Joanne Mills says most people can concentrate for 45 minutes to an hour at a time, but then need 15 minutes to rest. She suggests picking your break activity mdash;taking a walk, listening to music mdash;and setting a timer for 15 minutes. quot;It rsquo;s a cue to your mind quot; she says.
Mills also suggests setting targets and stopping when you rsquo;ve reached them. quot; Some students will take that break even if they haven rsquo;t finished what they set out to do and then they don rsquo;t really relax or enjoy it because their mind is racing with ? I must, I should, I have to. rsquo; ldquo; If you rsquo;re in the flow, ride the momentum until you come to a natural break in the material, then set the timer again and walk to the corner store.
Alternating which books you rsquo;re hitting also helps. Work on English for an hour, then switch to math. It rsquo;s like exercising multiple muscles at the gym, as different parts of your brain work for different subjects.
Bruckner says that to maintain a healthy mind-body-spirit temperament in the heat of exam season, sit down with your calendar.
quot;Make a schedule for a month mdash;when your assignments are due, when your final exams are, what the weighting is for each, quot; she says.
The United Nations declared 2011 to 2012 the Year of the Bat. The campaign was launched as a way to strengthen efforts for protecting the world rsquo;s only flying mammal. These creatures can be found in many parts of the world. Bats live in cities, deserts, grasslands and forests. There are over 1,200 bat species.
The smallest bat in the world is from Southeast Asia. This kind of bat measures about 30 millimeters in length. The world rsquo;s largest bat, the Giant Golden-Crowned Flying Fox, has a wingspan of 1.5 meters. Most bats eat insects, but many feed on fruit or nectar from flowers.
Many people think bats are blind, but this is not true. Many species have very good sight. Most bats communicate and find their way by making quot;echolocation quot; (回声定位法) noises. They produce high-frequency noises and can estimate the distance of an object by using the sound echoes that bounce back to them. So, while hats may travel in total darkness, they ldquo;see rdquo; using sound.
Sadly, bats are widely feared and misunderstood. Most bats come out of their shelters only at nightfall. Three bat species feed on blood. Because of these qualities, bats have long been linked in many cultures to death, darkness and blood-drinking.
Yet bats are important for agriculture and our environment. They help pollinate (授粉) plants and spread seeds. They also help control insects. Bats eat huge numbers of insects, including kinds that damage crops.
For example, a brown bat can eat more than 1,000 insects in one hour. One report says bats save American farmers billions of dollars every year by reducing crop damage and limiting the need for chemicals that kill insects.
Over one-fifth of all bat species are under threat. They face disease and the human destruction of their natural environments. In some areas, diseases have killed nearly 100% of bat populations.
Play is the basic business of childhood, and in recent years research has shown the great importance of play in the development of a human being. From earliest infancy (婴儿期), every child needs opportunity and right materials for play, and the main tools of play are toys. The main function of toys is to suggest, encourage and play. To succeed in this, they must be good toys, which children will play with often, and will come back again and again. Therefore, it is important to choose suitable toys for different stages of a child’s development.
In recent years research on infant development has shown that the standard a child is likely to reach, within the range of his inherited abilities, is largely determined in the first three years of his life. So a baby’s ability to benefit from the right play materials should not be underestimated. A baby who is encouraged, talked to and shown things and played with, has the best chance of growing up successfully.
In the next stage, from three to five years old, curiosity knows no bounds. Every type of suitable toys should be made available to the child, for trying out, experimenting and learning, for discovering his own particular ability: Bricks and jigsaws and construction toys; painting, scribbling and making things; sand and water play; toys for imaginative and pretending play — the first social games for learning to play and get on with others.
But at the third stage of play development — from five to seven or eight years old — the child is at school. But for a few more years play is still the best way of learning, at home or at school. It is easier to see which type of toys the child most enjoys.
Until the age of seven or eight, play and work mean much the same to a child. But once reading has been mastered, then books become the main source of learning. Toys are still interesting and valuable, which lead up to new hobbies, but their significance has changed. To a child of nine or ten years old, toys and games mean, as to adults, relaxation and fun.
In the earlier days of computer history, there was a quite widespread concern that computers would take over the world from man one day. Already today, less than forty years later, as computers are relieving us of more and more of the routine tasks in business and in our personal lives, we are faced with a less dramatic but also less foreseen problem. People tend to be over-trusting of the functions of computers and are reluctant to challenge their authority. Indeed, they behave as if they were hardly aware that wrong buttons might be pushed, or that a computer might simply fail to work properly.
Obviously, there would be no point in investing in a computer if you had to check all its answers, but people should also rely on their own internal computers and check the machine when they have the feeling that something had gone wrong. Questioning and routine double checks must continue to be as much a part of good business as they were in pre-computer days. Maybe each computer should come with the following warning: for all the help this computer may provide, it should not be seen as a device that can take the place of fundamental thinking and reasoning kills.
