Passage 2 Questions 21 to 25 are based on the following passage. While you want to be a friend to your child, sharing happy stories and sad moments, such friendship does not include equality. You should remain the captain of the ship, advise psychologists (心理学家). You may listen to the voices of the crew, but it’s up to you to set the course. Psychologist Diana Baumrind has identified three types of parents: permissive, autocratic and authoritative.If a 13-year-old child wants to attend a Saturday-night party, a permissive parent might say, “OK, but try not to stay out too late.” Permissive parents are either not very caring to their kids or try to win them over by allowing them full freedom. An autocratic parent might respond, “No, you’re too young for that. End of discussion.” An autocratic parent tells children exactly what they must do or how they must behave. Children can not argue with an autocratic parent. The authoritative parent considers the child’ viewpoint, and then decides: “You know our rule about weekends. We agreed on a ten o’clock time limit. You can go to the party if you can be home by then.” Kids prefer the authoritative style, which gives them space but also sets firm limits. Baumrind’s studies show that parents who allow their teens freedom with responsibility, within disciplinary limits, have more influence than either autocratic or permissive parents. By not giving specific or too strict instructions about everything, they allow the important points to show above the useless talks. Coming down hard on every minor detail can make the situation out of control. When your son lets his hair grow to his shoulders, or your daughter experiments with black nail polish, accept the appearance as a harmless fashion. If, however, he or she asks to attend a party where you suspect drugs might be used, put your foot down and keep it there. |

For many people today, reading is no longer relaxation. To keep up their work they must read letters, reports, trade publications, interoffice communications, not to mention newspapers and magazines: a never-ending flood of words. In getting a job or advancing in one, the ability to read and comprehend quickly can mean the difference between success and failure. Yet the unfortunate fact is that most of us are poor readers. Most of us develop poor reading habits at an early age, and never get over them. The main problem lies in language itself – words. Single words have little meaning until they are combined into phrases, sentences and paragraphs. Unfortunately, however, the untrained reader does not read groups of words. He reads one word at a time, often regressing to reread words or passages. Regression, or looking back over what you have just read, is a common bad habit in reading. Another habit which slows down the speed of reading is vocalization – sounding each word either orally or mentally as one reads.
To overcome these bad habits, some reading clinics use a device called accelerator (加速器), which moves a bar down the page at a predetermined speed. The bar is set at a slightly faster rate than the reader finds comfortable, in order to “stretch” him. The accelerator forces the reader to read fast, making word-by-word reading, regression and vocalization virtually impossible. At first, comprehension is sacrificed for speed. But when you learn to read ideas, you will not only read faster, but your comprehension will improve. Many people have found their reading skills improved a lot after some training. |

Passage 4 The Plain of Jars (石缸平原) is a great man-made wonder in Laos, a country in southeast Asia. It is made up of thousands of stone jars. More than 90 jar sites have been found there. Each site has from 1 to 400 stone jars. The jars come in different sizes from 1 to 3 meters tall. Scientists have long been perplexed by their original use. Not long ago, scientists found ancient things and burial practices at the Plain of Jars. “This will be the first major effort since the 1930s to try to understand the purpose of the jars and who created them.” Dougald O’Reilly from the Australian National University said. “The jars are empty now, but it is possible that they were once used to hold bodies.” Only a few simple objects, such as a handful of glass beads, have been found at the burial sites. And scientists think they are from about 500 or 600 BC to 550 AD. An Australia-Laos research team spent a month collecting data at the site. O’Reilly said, “Though the stone jars remain a mystery, I hope a better understanding of the Plain of Jars will help have it listed as a World Heritage site (世界遗产保护区). ” |
