Crime is everywhere. In our neighborhood, in the neighboring state, wherever we look, we find criminals and crime. Criminals have ______ a part of our daily lives. Does this mean we let them be the darkness of our society? No, definitely not. Eliminating crime and criminals is our duty, and we cannot ignore it. Getting the rightly accused to a just ______ is very important. Some criminals commit a crime because they have no other option to survive, but some do it for fun. I do not advocate for everybody. A person ______ stole bread from a grocery store, definitely does not deserve the death penalty. However, a serial killer, who kills people for fun or for his personal gain, definitely deserves it. The death penalty should continue ______ eliminate the garbage of our society. Not everybody deserves to die, but some people surely do. I support the death penalty because of several reasons. Firstly, I believe that it serves as a deterrent and helps in ______ crime. Secondly, it is true that it is irreversible, but it is hard to kill a wrongly convicted person due to the several chances given to the convicted to prove his innocence. Thirdly, the death penalty assures safety of the society by eliminating these criminals. Finally, I believe in “a life for a life”. |

One day a famous speaker gave a speech to a crowd of people. He held up a 20-dollar bill. He asked, “Who would like this $20 bill?” Hands were ______. Then he said, “I am going to give this $20 to one of you, but first let me do this.” He began to crumple(弄皱)the bill. He then asked the audience, “ ______ still wants it?” Still the hands went up in the air. “What ______ I do this? ” He asked, and he fell it on the ground, and started to step on it. He picked it up. Now the bill was dirty and crumpled. “Now who still wants it” Still the hands went up.“My friends,” He continued, “You have all learned a good lesson. No matter ______ I did to the money, you still wanted it because the bill did not lose its value. It was still worth $20. Many times in our lives, we are dropped, crumpled, and stepped on, because we sometimes make wrong decisions, or we may meet with something we do not ______. When that happens, we feel depressed and think we are worthless. But in fact no matter what has happened or what will happen, you will never lose your value. The worth of our life comes not in what we do or whom we know, but in who we are! Don’t forget ‘the worth of a thing does not depend on its outside looks, but on its inner value.’ This is the truth of life.” |

Peter and Paul had got permission ______ their parents to camp in a field close to their farm. But, being adventurous boys, they know it would be more exciting to camp in the woods that lay beyond the river. Excitedly, the boys went away ______ their tent and food. Carrying their heavy load, the two brothers walked along the riverbank. As they entered the cool, shadowy woods, they began to ______ a suitable camping spot. Finally, Peter followed his brother deeper into the woods. They put up their tent, and settled down to eat the sandwiches they had made, then decided to find their way back to the river to catch some fish. However, they were a long distance from where they were ______ to be. They were not even sure of where they had ______ their camp. They sat in disappointment for a few minutes until Peter had a bright idea. |

The first time I remember noticing the crossing guard was ______ he waved to me as I drove my son to school. He presented me ______ a puzzle — all because he waved to me like someone does on seeing a close friend. A big, bright smile accompanied his wave. For the next few days I tried to study his face to see if I knew him. I didn’t. Perhaps he had mistaken me ______ someone else. By the time I contented myself with the conclusion that he and I were strangers, we were greeting each other warmly every morning like old friends. Then one day the mystery was solved. As I approached the school he was standing in the middle of the road holding out his stop sign. I was in line ______ four cars. Once the kids had reached the safety of the sidewalk, he lowered his sign and let the cars ______. To the first he waved and smiled in just the same way he had done to me over the last few days. The kids already had the window down and were happily waving their reply. The second car got the same greeting from the crossing guard, and the driver, a stiff-looking businessman, gave a brief, almost awkward wave back. |

Why do we laugh? For years scientists have asked ______ this question. No other animals laugh and smile — only human beings. So does laughter help us to survive in any way? The answer seems to be that smiling and laughter help us to ______ , reducing tension and preventing illnesses which are caused by stress. Laughter really is the best medicine? Scientists in California asked a group of actors to act out five different feelings: happiness, sadness, anger, surprise and ______ — just using their faces. Changes in their heart rate, blood pressure and temperature were written down. Most of the feelings they acted out didn’t cause changes, but when the actors smiled, their heart rate and their blood pressure ______. This happened even though they were only acting! So even if we feel sad inside, smiling seems to make us feel better. So if you find yourself in a stressful situation, try to imagine how it must seem to an outsider ______ a sense of humour and let yourself laugh. |

It was a busy morning, about 8:30, when an elderly gentleman in his 80s came to the hospital. I saw him ______ his watch and told the nurse that he was in a hurry for an appointment at 9:30. I decided, since I was not busy, my patient didn’t ______ at the appointed hour, I would examine his wound.Meanwhile, the gentleman told me that he needed to go to the nursing home to eat breakfast with his wife and that she had a special disease. I asked if she would be worried if he was a bit late. He replied that she ______ knew who he was, that she had not been able to recognize him for five years now. I was moved, and asked him, “And you still go every morning, even though she doesn’t know who you are?”He smiled and said. “She doesn’t know me but I know who she is.” Now I realize that in marriages true love is acceptance of all, that the happiest people don’t ______ have the best of everything; they just ______ the best of everything they have. Life isn’t about how to live through the storm, but how to dance in the rain. |

There are three kinds of goals: short-term, medium-range and long-term goals.Short-term goals are those that usually deal with current activities, which we can apply on a daily basis. Such goals can be achieved in a week or less, or two weeks, or possibly, months. It should be remembered that just as a building is no stronger than its foundation, long-term goals cannot amount to very much without the achievement of solid short-term goals. Upon completing our short-term goals, we should date the occasion and then add new short-term goals that will build on those that have been completed. The intermediate goals build on the foundation of the short-term goals. They might deal with just one term of school or the entire school year, or they could even extend for several years. Any time you move a step at a time, you should never allow yourself to become dis?couraged or overwhelmed. As you complete each step, you will enforce the belief in your ability to grow and succeed. And as your list of completion dates grow, your motivation and desire will increase.Long-term goals may be related to our dreams of the future. They might cover five years or more. Life is not a static thing. We should never allow a long-term goal to limit us or our course of action. |

Education is not an end, but a means to an end. In other words, we do not educate children only for the purpose of educating them. Our purpose is to fit them for life.In some modem countries it has for some time been fashionable to think that by free education for all — one can solve all the problems of society and build a perfect nation. But we can already see that free education for all is not enough; we find in such countries a far larger number of people with university degree; they refuse to do what they think “low” work; and, in fact, manual work is thought to be dirty and shameful in such countries. But we have only to think a moment to understand that the work of a completely uneducated farmer is far more important than that of a professor; we can live without education, but we die if we have no food. If no one cleaned our streets and took the rubbish away from our houses, we should get terrible diseases in our towns. In fact, when we say that all of us must be educated to fit us for life, it means that we must be educated in such a way that, firstly, each of us can do whatever work suited to his brains and ability and, secondly, that we can realize that all jobs are necessary to society, and that is very bad to be ashamed of one’s work. Only such a type of education can be considered valuable to society. |

Many people who work in London prefer to live outside it, and to go in to their offices or schools every day by train, car or bus, even though this means they have to get up early in the morning and reach home late in the evening. One advantage of living outside London is that houses are cheaper. Even a small flat in London without a garden costs quite a lot to rent. With the same money, one can get a little house in the country with a garden of oneˊs own. Then, in the country one can really get away from the noise and hurry of busy working lives. Even though one has to get up earlier and spend more time in trains or buses, one can sleep better at night and during weekends and on summer evenings, one can enjoy the fresh, clean air of the country. If one likes gardens, one can spend oneˊs free time digging, plant?ing, watering and doing the hundred and one other jobs which are needed in a garden. Then, when the flowers and vegetables come up, one has got the reward together with those who have shared the secret of Nature. Some people, however, take no interest in country things: for them, happiness lies in the town, with its cinemas and theatres, beautiful shops and busy streets, dance-halls and restaurants. Such people would feel that their life was not worth living if they had to live it outside London. An occasional walk in one of the parks and a fortnightˊs (two weeks) visit to the sea every summer is all the country they want: the rest they are quite prepared to leave to those who are glad to get away from London every night. |

Advertisement can be thought of “as the means of making known in order to buy or sell goods or services”. Advertisement aims to increase people’s awareness and arouse interest. It tries to inform and to persuade. The media are all used to spread the message. The press offers a fairly cheap method, and magazines are used to reach special sections of the market. The cinema and commercial radio are useful for local market. Television, although more expensive, can be very effective. Public notices are fairly cheap and more permanent in their power of attraction. Other ways of increasing consumer interest are through exhibitions and trade fairs as well as direct mail advertisement. There can be no doubt that the growth in advertisement is one of the most striking features of the western world in this century. Many businesses such as those handling frozen foods, liquor, tobacco and medicines have been built up largely by advertisement. We might ask whether the cost of advertisement is paid for by the producer or by the customer. Since advertisement forms part of the cost of production, which has to be covered by the selling price, it is clear that it is the customer who pays for advertisement. However, if large scale advertisement leads to increased demand, production costs are reduced, and the customer pays less.It is difficult to measure exactly the influence of advertisement on sales. When the market is growing, advertisement helps to increase demand. When the market is shrinking, advertisement may prevent a bigger fall in sales than would occur without its support. What is clear is that businesses would not pay large sums for advertisement if they were not convinced of its value to them. |

Shyness is the cause of much unhappiness for a great many people. Shy people are anx?ious and self-conscious; that is, they are excessively concerned with their own appearance and actions. Worrisome thoughts are constantly occurring in their minds: what kind of im?pression am I making? Do they like me? Do I sound stupid? Am I wearing unattractive clothes? It is obvious that such uncomfortable feelings must negatively affect people. A personˊs conception of himself or herself is reflected in the way he or she behaves, and the way a person behaves affects other peopleˊs reactions. In general, the way people think about them?selves has a profound effect on all areas of their lives.Shy people, having low self-esteem, are likely to be passive and easily influenced by others. They need reassurance that they are doing "the right thing". Shy people are very sensitive to criticism; they feel it confirms their feelings of inferiority. They also find it diffi?cult to be pleased by compliment with a statement like this one, "Youˊre just saying that to make me feel good. I know itˊs not true." It is clear that while self-awareness is a healthy quality, overdoing it is harmful. Can shyness be completely eliminated, or at least reduced? Fortunately, people can overcome shyness with determined and patient efforts in building self-confidence. Since shy?ness goes hand in hand with a lack of self-esteem, it is important for people to accept their weaknesses as well as their strengths. Each one of us is a unique, worthwhile individual, interested in our own personal ways. The better we understand ourselves, the easier it becomes to live up to our full potential. Letˊs not allow shyness to block our chances for a rich and fulfilling life. |

How men first learnt to invent words is unknown; in other words, the origin of language is a mystery. All we really know is that men, unlike animals, somehow invented cer?tain sounds to express thought and feelings, actions and things, so that they could communi?cate with each other; and that later they agreed upon certain signs, called letters, which could be combined to present those sounds, and which could be written down. Those sounds, whether spoken or written in letters, we call words. The power of words, then, lies in their associations—the things they bring up before our minds. Words become filled with meaning for us by experience; and the longer we live, the more certain words recall to us the glad and sad events of our past; and the more we read and learn, the more the number of words that mean something increases.Great writers are those who not only have great thoughts but also express these thoughts in words which appeal powerfully to our minds and emotions. This charming and telling use of words is what we call literary style. Above all, the real poet is a master of words. He can convey his meaning in words which sing like music and which by their position and associa?tion can move men to tears. We should therefore learn to choose our words carefully and use them accurately, or they will make our speech silly and vulgar. |
